Ode to August's Last Day

It started out cool and gray for August’s last day
But a couple of layers kept the chill at bay

By afternoon the sun was a bloom
Keeping us warm and in a good mood

A drive along the coast side
To our Souls delight, we felt right energized

Dropped-in a café and filled our tummy
With biscuits and tea . . . oh so yummy

Took in the view with water so blue, atop rocky bay
Tossed a rock or two and laughed at the spray

Then on to winding roads to where we didn't know
Enjoying the ride, picturesque countryside

On our last stop, high on a mountain top
We picked wild berries, hidden between the big rocks

Came home relaxed and glad to be alive for yet another day

Sights & Sounds of Newfoundland

Today I went twacking with Marion & Craig in St. Johns. For those not familiar with the term “twacking” it’s a Newfoundland term meaning to go shopping or just looking in shops. Newfoundlanders have so many unique words, different from typical North American English, that they even have their own dictionary.  For those that are interested, here is a link to a Newfoundland Dictionary website   http://www.heritage.nf.ca/dictionary/

My most favorite shop today was Fred’s music shop. Like the special dictionary just for Newfoundlanders, they also have lots of music that is very distinctively Newfoundland. It has a Celtic feel, but they also made it their own.

God even rested for a day

Sort of taking a break from the blog today, it was a down, relaxing day. Not much to report, anyway.

Sending lots of love, big hugs and cool breezes to my family and friends. Cool breezes meant for those sweltering in Florida.

Father & Son Fishing, Brigus for Lunch and Cupids Root Cellar

Gorgeous day today! It was a bright, sunny day with temperatures in the high 80’s.

I got inspired by the huge plate of freshly picked wild blueberries (by Dave) and made a big batch of blueberry pancakes for breakfast. It was decided during our pancake fest that Craig and his father Dave, would go fishing. They went out into the woods on a pond with Dave’s good fishing buddy Harvey. At the end of the day both Craig and Dave caught a fish each.

As for the ladies, Marion (Craig’s mom) and myself we relaxed for a bit, visited with Marion’s brother and wife who live next door, and went for drive along the coastline. We stopped in Brigus for a yummy lunch at the North St. Café.

Then we drove to Cupids and I took this picture of what we think is a root cellar. It was a rather unique looking root cellar.

The rest of the day was spent running some errands and relaxing.

Man this island is big!

Left Gros Morne and headed back to Shearstown, where Craig’s parents live.

Took a side-trip to Twillingate, which was sort of on the way. We ate at a wonderful tea room and bakery. I had homemade baked beans with fried dough called Toutons, hmmm so good. Didn’t stay long, we had another 4-5 hours left on our drive home, but I took a couple of pictures.

Finally, we made it to "Home Sweet Home."

Western Brook Hike, Parting is such sweet sorrow, Baby Moose, Hot Bath, and Murder Mystery Theater

After another wonderful sleep in the mini-van and more soothing wake up than the day before we had a big hot breakfast and family time. Eventually we began the pack-up process and departed the Cow Head campground.

We went for a hike at Western Brook and it was a pleasure after the Green Gardens, hike from Hell. This area is flat and mostly marshy bogs. They have boardwalks built to keep us out of the bog.

After our hike we stopped at a chip van, which are usually vans along the side of the road where they serve French fries (a.k.a. chips) and other local favorites, such as moose burgers and soup, squid rings and pea soup. We filled our bellies, took some family photos and then said our goodbyes. Jackie, Scott, Sarah, and David went on their way back home to New Brunswick and Craig and I stayed in Cow Head at a HOTEL. No more camping for me, No-Sir-Ree-Bob.

On our way back to the hotel in Cow Head we saw a baby moose with its mom eating some vegetation along the side of the road. We stopped to take a gander. See the cutie pie below.

Once checked-in to the Shallow Bay Hotel in Cow Head, I took a hot bath. It was the best bath ever. Our room was fantastic and service at Shallow Bay Hotel was top notch.

After a long soak in the tub we hit the town of Cow Head, which really is not big at all, but none the less we took in a great show at the Gros Morne Theater (http://www.theatrenewfoundland.com/play_Axe.html)  just a couple of steps from our hotel. It was a murder mystery, “The Double Axe Murders,” based on a true story; really well done, fantastic actors, great set design, and story line. Then a few steps and sometime later, we’re tucked into our bed, not a tent or mini-van, to sleep and dream.

Car alarm wake-up, Yoga at Lake Lomond, then off to Cow Head Beach

It was absolutely divine to sleep in the mini-van last night. We stowed the back seats and set-up the sleeping gear on the flat floor. It was nice and quiet dry and warm. The only time it was not quiet was when I opened the side door to the van to go to the bathroom at 6 in the morning and set off the van alarm. Craig, who was sleeping in the tent next to the van and my niece Sarah sleeping in the mini-van with me woke to the alarm. Thankfully Craig, who had the keys (as well as the one who had locked us in at bedtime) turned off the alarm very quickly. It was a rough way to start a day and I’m sure that my fellow campers in the campground were none to pleased with me.

After a bit, I walked down to Lake Lomond for meditation and yoga practice. It was so beautiful and peaceful down by the lake that it made for a wonderful setting to my practice.

Then off to Cow Head campgrounds, which was about an hour away from Lake Lomond. It was a gorgeous drive through the park. I don’t know of that many national parks that are so big that after an hour of driving you’re still in the park.

The Cow Head campground was a bit of an upgrade from Lake Lomond, in so much as you can upgrade a camping site. Our site was closer to the restrooms and as a plus these facilities were nicer - less outdoorsy. I’ve never been a big fan of openings that allow for spiders and other creepy crawlies to waltz right into areas that I blindly bare my bum.

Another bonus to this campground was the sandy beach just a short stroll from our site. For my friends in Florida, a sandy beach is no big deal, but up here in Newfoundland its a rarity, normally they have rocky beaches. It works out well for me because I’d much rather look for interesting rocks than sea shells anyways. We went for a walk on the beach, took in the fresh ocean air and scenery.

Camping, Hiking, & Eating

Last night was my first night camping in a really, really, long time. How did it go? I think that I like the idea of camping more than the reality. I must of woken up at least 50 times. Everything was damp and there was a family of noisy red squirrels that were partying next to our tent first thing in the morning. It sounded like the strangest alarm clock.
Even though the night could have been better, the view outside of our tent was amazing. See for yourself.
Off to check out the park and did the Green Garden hike, don’t be fooled by the name, it was a hike from Hell. Being a girl from Florida, where the only inclines are man-made steps, this hike was a true challenge. It took me at least 4 hours and there were hundreds of steps. On a positive note, it was beautiful hike and a great workout.

Must eat . . . after our long hike . . .  we ate at an amazing place in Woody Point, The Lighthouse Café. Below are some pictures that I took right outside of the café.
On our second night camping, I befriended the mini-van. Tune in to see how camping in a mini-van goes.

On the road to Gros Morne

Long drive from Craig’s family home to the other side of the Island to Gros Morne National Park. We had our niece and nephew for the drive while the parents drove ahead. Turned out to be 9 hours on the road, including stops, but I think it was a bit too long of drive for one day. The kids where great, wouldn’t you be if you got to watch movies, lounge in bucket seats and eat junk food.

Arrived at Gros Morne Park and it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Set-up camp at Lake Lomond . . . tune in tomorrow to see how camping goes.

Big City, Lunch at the Sprout, Forts, Geo Center, & a Free Concert in Cupids

Whew, I’m tired just typing the title to this post. Today was a full day.

Went with the men, Craig, Scott and David to St. Johns and ate at the vegetarian restaurant the Sprout. The food was amazing! However, the service was a bit to be desired. I think it was just our server. http://thescope.ca/scoff/the-sprout-restaurant
Then off to look at huge rocks in the ocean and man-made rocks (forts) at Fort Amherst/lighthouse, Signal Hill and then to look at rocks of every kind at the Geo Center
Landing home for a quick home cooked meal then, off to Cupids to see my favorite Newfoundland band, The Once. It was free, outside on a wharf, and it was cold! The wind was coming off the ocean and it was night time. Brrrr! Even though it was cold, the concert was fantastic. Their sound soothes my soul. Check’em out http://www.theonce.ca/

3 for 3: Three hikes in three days

Another trip to Mad Rocks for a hike . . . I could go there every day.

Happy Anniversary to my sister-in-law Jackie & husband Scott!

Cupids for a hike, dragonflies and a Midsummer's Night Dream

We went for a hike in the outskirts of a town called Cupids. At the entrance of the trail was this sign.
Actually, the full sign ended with “pedestrian’s using walk trails,” but there was no punctuation and I think they did it on purpose to get a laugh.

As usual the hike had countless breathtaking views and more wild blueberries than I have ever seen. My brother-in-law brought his insect net and caught this dragonfly.
It was a catch and release expedition – no dragonflies were harmed in the taking of this photo.

After our hike there was an outdoor performance of a Midsummer’s Night Dream. It was an excellent show, will acted, and very funny.

The whole day worked out perfectly and I don’t think if we had planned the day, that it could have worked out any better.

Fun Fact: Newfoundland has its own time zone. It is an hour and half ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

Our first full day in Newfoundland

Slept like a log and woke late in the morning . . . it was wonderful. Brunch with the family and drank copious amounts of coffee. When I say family, it is includes: Craig’s parents and his sister her husband and their two kids. It’s a full house, relaxed-family atmosphere, and everyone has someone (or two) to hang out with.

I went for a hike with my sister-in-law at Mad Rocks, one of my favorite places. We hiked in the rain, drizzle, and fog – a true Newfoundland experience. We ate wild blueberries along the path. The smell of the air was fresh, cool, and slightly salty due to the Atlantic Ocean, with a fragrant mix of flowers and evergreens. There were several rocky beaches where I spent time searching for unique rocks and was not disappointed.

The rock collector is me, down by the sea.

Three planes and 16 hours later, we arrive at Craig's parent's home

We were awake by 4:50 AM to be able to get to the Tampa airport by 6 AM. We actually went south to go north. From Tampa, FL to Fort Lauderdale, FL to New Jersey to St. John, Newfoundland, Canada. Why did we take this flight? Well, it was cheap.

This first flight/plane from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale was so small that it seated less than 20 and only 5 people, including Craig and I, were on this flight. The flight attendant requested that two people move to the back of the plane to stabilize it – he wasn’t joking. The plane engine sounded like a Prius on helium and I think I saw duct tape holding parts of the plane together. Thankfully it was a short flight, especially because there was no bathroom on it.

The rest of our journey was uneventful, except for the drive at 10:30 PM from the St. John, Newfoundland airport to Craig’s family home when we passed a car accident. What was unusual about this accident was that a car had hit a moose (moose was killed – no suffering). This is a common occurrence in Newfoundland. It’s a reason to keep your eyes on the side of the road when driving at night. We made it home safe and sound.

Newfoundland, Canada our first stop in our world travels

My husband is from Newfoundland and we are looking forward to spending time with family and enjoying the cooler Canadian weather.

Weathered and warmed by a Florida sun
My body welcomed the gray sky glum

Chilly breeze blowing through the trees
Icy north Atlantic; cooler days granted

Packing in Florida

Not guns, but stuff.

Our house is up for sale and we are packing up most of our belongs to stage the house as well as make it easier for movers if the house sells while we are traveling. Nothing like packing up a house to make you want to have less stuff.

We are also packing for our travels. One small problem is that we don't have a backpack to pack our stuff for our travels. So, the search for just the right backpack is on. Many to choose from, maybe too many. So, I did the most logical thing, I consulted with my brother the archeologist. He said, "Don't skimp on shoes or backpacks." Thanks to my brother, our backpack search is now narrowed down to just the Cadillac's of backpacks or as I like to call them the "go, go, gadget backpacks." I'll keep you posted on the one we choose, which I'm sure you are waiting with bated breath.

Where are we now and where are we going?

Right now we are in St. Petersburg, Florida. We are packing up our house, getting ready for our travels, and spending as much time as we can with our family and friends.

On August 17th, we are flying to Newfoundland, Canada to spend time with my husband, Craig's, family. We will be there for several weeks. We were planning on starting our world travels from Newfoundland, but instead we decided to fly back to St. Petersburg for a couple of days and then leave from Florida to Italy.

World Travel Itinerary . . . subject to change
  • Italy for several weeks
  • Egypt for a couple of days to see the pyramids
  • India - Kerala for sure, but anything is possible - we would like to stay for at least a month if not longer.
After India, we are not exactly sure, but possible locations include: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, New Zealand.

We couldn't be more excited and I look forward to using this blog to document our adventures.

Welcome to my blog "LB Traveling Light"!

Why LB Traveling Light?
Well, "LB" is my initials and "traveling light" is my future intentions.
A little bit more about the "traveling light."
My husband and I are selling practically all of our possessions, house included, and then we are taking the next couple of months to travel around the world. We are packing as light as possible, hopefully just a backpack for each of us and embarking upon our journey.
The phrase, "traveling light" was coined by our dear friend Erin J. who was so inspired by our future plans that she wrote a song titled, "traveling light." With her permission, I borrowed it for my blog. Thanks Erin!

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fun Fact: Synonyms to the word, "light" include bright, nimble, easy, weightless, gentle, subtle, carefree, entertaining, glow, ignite.
I couldn't think of a better word that represents our future intentions and hopefully our state of mind while we travel.
